Co-directed by Professor of English Julia Lupton and Chancellor’s Professor of Acting Eli Simon, the Center aims to share the wonderful world of Will with the campus and community. A cross-campus initiative with the Office of Research, the School of Humanities and the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the New Swan Shakespeare Center supports New Swan Shakespeare Festival each summer and presents lectures, workshops and performances, all designed to delight and educate enthusiasts of the Bard from every walk of life.

Program for Educators

The Program for Educators brings teachers and students to UCI during the summer and throughout the school year to see the First Folio, attend performances, workshops, and residencies, celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday in style, and participate in other festive and informative programs. Many participating teachers are also UCI alums! Please join us in helping them take their learning back to their classrooms so that they can enrich the education of hundreds of local students.

Testimonials

"I was in Professor Lupton’s Shakespeare class in 2012. I also had the pleasure of working with her grad students as they interpreted The Winter's Tale during my last quarter at UCI. I attended Educator's Day in 2018, where I got to watch and analyze A Midsummer Night's Dream. I've taken these lectures to heart, and have put this material into practice when I teach Shakespeare to sophomores and seniors Shakespeare in high school today. My AP Lit class just finished Hamlet, and my Sophomores are in the middle of Macbeth!"

Sarah Johnston ('13; English and FMS); teacher, Coast Union High School

"I can’t thank you enough for bringing Tustin teachers to campus for our very own First Folio Friday. The results of our survey were overwhelmingly positive. Teachers were inspired and reminded why they do what they do. I would love to learn more about your plans for Educators Day at New Swan. I know many of our teachers would jump at the chance to join."

Dawne Michelle Ciecek, Tustin Unified School District

"Thank you again for a wonderful visit to UCI to see the First Folio. My students are still talking about it, and today a student told me he has decided to apply to transfer to the UCI English program as a result of our visit! He had only been planning to apply to CSUs."

Michelle Fagundes, English and Women’s and Gender Studies, Cerritos College
