Department of Chicano/Latino Studies

The Department of Chicano/Latino Studies provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to examine and gain a deep understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of Americans of Latina/o origin or ancestry from a variety of scholarly perspectives (i.e., history, literature, political science, psychology, public health, sociology). Our curriculum is designed to provide an awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the language, history, culture, literature, and creative (art, dance, drama, film, music) accomplishments of Chicano/Latino communities.

UCI is a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), which means that 25% of our students identify as Latina/o. Our major is designed to be flexible to allow students to start at various points in their undergraduate career and to combine, when they wish, with another major on campus. The Department of Chicano/Latino Studies at UC Irvine is proud to offer undergraduates a B.A. degree in Chicano/Latino Studies, an undergraduate minor, and our graduate programs which consist of our Graduate Emphasis, UC-CUBA (to promote scholarly study of Cuba by scholars in the United States) and PRIME-LC (to provide training for medical students in treating Latino patients).

Our students go on to law school, medical school, Ph.D programs, and to careers in public service; this requires taking on the costs associated with the application process and the earning of professional certifications. Our Giving Day mission is to fund five $1000 awards to defray those costs for our students (and even recent alumni).

Our amazing students balance their academic achievements with research engagement, jobs that help pay their bills, being there for their families, and giving back to their communities. They plan to become doctors, psychologists, lawyers, scientists, nurses, social workers, teachers, and businesspeople who can better serve Latinos and all of society. Help us to reward our students and defray their costs as they as work to reach their full academic and professional potential.
