UCI has embarked on a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in the campus’ open space resources, collectively referred to as Naturescape. UCI’s Naturescape vision is to optimize UCI’s open space to serve campus research, teaching, community engagement, wellbeing and sustainability programs through open space improvements that reflect and capitalize on the unique human and biological heritage of our region and bring significant value to the UCI campus. A collaboratively planned, managed and preserved Naturescape will fundamentally advance UCI’s mission in unique and transformative ways.
UCI’s Naturescape Vision will:
- Establish a botanical garden centered in Aldrich Park to serve as the heart of UCI’s Naturescape to improve the health of UCI’s urban forest and provide outdoor activity space for campus activities and enhanced park areas for recreation and respite.
- Provide a connected open space trail system linking all sectors of the campus.
- Link UCI’s Naturescape to regional open space resources to improve access to natural areas and activities including walking, biking and wildlife viewing
- Provide outdoor activity spaces to support lifelong learning, wellness and community engagement including outdoor classroom spaces and other outdoor activity spaces.
