Thank you for your interest in supporting the School of Physical Sciences for UCI’s second annual giving day! This year, we would like to ask for your continued support for Math CEO. Our incredible and dynamic Department of Mathematics is actively engaged in a range of outreach activities to the local community that aim towards generating interest in mathematics, promoting education in mathematics, and demonstrating the beauty and power of mathematics. These activities include MATH CEO, our outreach program that directly impacts the underserved middle-school students in our local community.
UCI Math CEO is a free mathematical enrichment program developed by faculty at UC Irvine to serve the underprivileged community of Santa Ana. Every week (for a total of 24 times throughout the academic year), a group of 100 middle school students are brought to the UCI campus to work on fun but challenging mathematics activities with the help of UCI faculty, graduate and undergraduate mentors and learn about college and STEM careers. The program not only introduces kids to critical thinking at a young age but provides a roadmap to a college education in STEM and hope for a brighter future. To increase the quality of the program, weekly training is provided to mentors. Founded in Fall 2014, the UCI Math CEO has quickly grown to be one of the largest math circles in the country that specifically targets underserved youth.
As you will see from the above video, this program is changing kids’ lives in big ways. We here at the school believe very strongly in the impact of our Math CEO program and devote funding where we can to support its operational expenses. Those funds only take us so far and we are currently fundraising to keep this program running for the underserved community that it supports. We encourage you to donate and show your support!
