We have told the story of nursing student Teylor Cohen throughout the year. It’s one that illustrates the impact of community generosity and scholarship support.
After four years of study, clinical training as a military medic and hours of education as a student at the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, he now prepares for spring graduation with a bachelor of nursing science degree.
It hasn’t been easy. Concerns about the challenges of a rigorous curriculum, an unrelenting pandemic and mounting financial burden dominated his days. However, Teylor remained resilient and committed to a profession that needs him now more than ever.
With the community’s support, his plan to graduate, pass the nursing licensing exam and secure a staff position at a local hospital emergency room will soon be reality.
Teylor is an exemplary UCI nursing graduate: A nurse committed to provide compassionate care to patients, their families and to a community that believed in his abilities from the beginning of his educational journey!
Because of UCI Giving Day and the generosity of our community, Teylor is one of nearly 100 nursing students who were provided with a Fundamentals Skills Lab Tote at the start of their nursing education.
“When I received the tote, I was very surprised. It was a very unexpected and generous donation,” the veteran Marine and busy foster father of two recalls.
The tote contains important items such as intravenous start kits, gloves, equipment to practice sterile dressing changes and Foley catheters. Most useful to Teylor is the sphygmomanometer — otherwise known as a blood pressure cuff — because he could hone his skills with it anywhere.
Teylor becomes visibly grateful as he recalls the day he and his classmates received their totes. “I felt so thankful that there were people out there who cared enough to help further our education and professional careers by providing us with tools we need to succeed.”
A future nurse needs your support! On May 18, UCI Giving Day, help us positively impact the lives of nursing students like Teylor by sponsoring a Fundamental Skills Lab Nursing Tote ($165 value) to an incoming pre-licensure student at the UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. A gift of any amount truly makes a difference today as we come together to make a collective impact. Your generosity will allow a nursing student to enter Fundamentals Lab with equipment essential to their success!
