UCI Giving Day 2022

The Office of Inclusive Excellence drives the centralized planning and collaborates with partners to attain UCI’s efforts on equity, diversity and inclusion. We bring passion, strategic vision, diverse expertise and commitment to ensure the fundamental connections between inclusive excellence and advancing the campus’ mission as a public research university and community ally. 

Your donation will help UCI to increase equity and inclusion for major priorities to: advance Black thriving, confront extremism, build capacities for exceptional scholarship in diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and promote public learning and understanding about inclusive excellence. Gifts to the Office of Inclusive Excellence Fund will provide general support for these four major priorities:  

1. Advance Black thriving

The Black Thriving Initiative was launched in August 2020 to recognize and respond to anti-Blackness as an existential threat to our mission as public research university. Efforts to-date have piloted a Black Thriving Initiative Cluster Hiring program, which successfully deepened expertise and scholar recruitment to enhance health equity. Your gift would sustain this important means to build scholarship and education for the success of Black students, faculty and staff, as well as alumni and communities served by UCI. Our goal for 2022-23 will be to launch a Black Thriving Institute with comprehensive care and support to close achievement gaps and to deepen community for undergraduate and graduate students. 

2. Confront extremism

Understanding extremism is a fundamental responsibility for citizenship in the 21st century. The scale and scope of extremism poses a threat to our civic institutions, democratic values and our very multi-cultural society. The program is designed to fortify our resilience as a campus community while advancing our commitment to inclusive excellence.

 3. Build capacities for exceptional scholarship

UCI CHANCELLOR’S ADVANCE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Since hosting its first cohort of postdoctoral scholars in 2013, the UCI-funded Chancellor’s ADVANCE Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (CAPFP) has broadened access for diverse scholars to bring their expertise to bear on basic and applied research that shape our world. The UCI CAPFP provides research fellowships and faculty mentoring that are consequential to exceptional scholars in all fields. These future faculty members not only redefine their disciplines, but also bring pioneering research, teaching and service to contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California through the students they mentor, and the practices that they demonstrate to advance inclusive excellence. Your gift would broaden opportunities to host more postdoctoral fellows through this extraordinary mentoring opportunity.

4. Promote public learning through an Inclusive Excellence Certificate Program

Launched in fall 2019 with a core course on UCI as a Minority Thriving Institution, this program has evolved to reach over 1,000 students, faculty and staff, reflecting nearly 350 certificate graduates. Nearly 1,200 students, faculty and staff have engaged in this public learning for over 22,000 learning hours about topics on minority thriving as well as community agency, wellness and allyship and strategies to overcome anti-Black racism and other forms of bias. Each meeting is an invitation to explore how best to actualize diversity, equity, inclusion and free speech on campus and beyond. With your gift, we can enhance modes of delivery for more innovative and collaborative learning.
