Founded as a department in 1968, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) was established as an independent school in 2002 and is the only computing-focused school in the entire UC system. ICS currently educates more than 3,500 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students. The school has 87 tenure-track faculty in three academic departments (Computer Science, Informatics, and Statistics) and offers seven different undergraduate programs, six doctoral programs, five master of science programs, and four professional master programs—all designed with the goal of preparing tomorrow’s leaders in the ever-changing world of information technology.
On a path of unprecedented growth over the past few years, ICS offers a remarkable breadth and depth of research and education programs, with particular strengths in the core areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, data science, embedded systems, graphics and visualization, human-computer interaction, and software engineering. Through a multitude of joint faculty appointments, research centers, and academic programs with other schools, ICS also offers an unparalleled environment for exploring and understanding the impact of computing and information technologies on application domains, with an emphasis on bioinformatics, education, gaming, health informatics, public policy, and sustainability.
ICS is committed to ensuring excellence through inclusion, cultivating a diverse student body and serving as a powerful engine of social mobility and economic growth while transforming our world through learning and discovery in computing and information technologies.
