Costa Rica Program

On behalf of University of California, Irvine, and the Costa Rica Program, we gladly invite you to join the Division of Student Affairs, and the Division of Undergraduate Education at UCI for a special giving opportunity.

Now in its 8th year, the UCI Costa Rica Program is an alternative break program and 2-quarter academic experience. Each year, the program allows UCI Undergraduate students of all academic levels and backgrounds to experience a global sustainability and cultural immersion program designed to foster cultural competence and global leadership. The participants serve as diplomatic ambassadors for UCI as they engage with the community and culture of Costa Rica. The 10-day trip is bookended by a Winter and Spring Course in partnership with the Minor in Civic and Community Engagement.

The 2019 cohort recently completed scholarly research projects regarding health, reforestation, tourism, and immigration. As part of the program’s on-going service learning component, they built a covered nursery for native tree seedlings in one of the most heavily deforested regions of the nation. Seedlings were shared with Costa Rican community farms and schools engaged in conservation, agroforestry, and ecotourism.

Participants return as global citizens, sharing lessons learned with the UCI community through educational programming and supporting a growing culture of sustainability on campus and beyond.

With your generous contributions, the Costa Rica Program can continue to assist deserving students in participating in this transformative experience.
