Shakespeare Center

Co-directed by Professor of English Julia Lupton and Chancellor’s Professor of Acting Eli Simon, the Center aims to share the wonderful world of Will with the campus and community. An interschool initiative between the School of Humanities and the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, UCI’s Shakespeare Center presents lectures, workshops and performances, all designed to delight and educate enthusiasts of the Bard from every walk of life.

Educators’ Day at New Swan Shakespeare Festival

This summer, the UCI Shakespeare Center will welcome local teachers to an afternoon of learning followed by New Swan Shakespeare Festival’s performance of The Merchant of Venice. Your contribution helps provide books, theater tickets, and sustenance for teachers from Irvine, Santa Ana, Tustin, and surrounding areas. The Educators Fund also brings teachers and students to campus during the school year to see the First Folio, celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday in style, and participate in other festive and informative programs. Many participating teachers are also UCI alums! Please join us in helping them take their learning back to their classrooms so that they can enrich the education of hundreds of local students.

TESTIMONIALS

I was in Professor Lupton’s Shakespeare class in 2012. I also had the pleasure of working with her grad students as they interpreted The Winter's Tale during my last quarter at UCI. I attended Educator's Day in 2018, where I got to watch and analyze A Midsummer Night's Dream. I've taken these lectures to heart, and have put this material into practice when I teach Shakespeare to sophomores and seniors Shakespeare in high school today. My AP Lit class just finished Hamlet, and my Sophomores are in the middle of Macbeth!"

"I can’t thank you enough for bringing Tustin teachers to campus for our very own First Folio Friday. The results of our survey were overwhelmingly positive. Teachers were inspired and reminded why they do what they do. I would love to learn more about your plans for Educators Day at New Swan. I know many of our teachers would jump at the chance to join."

"Thank you again for a wonderful visit to UCI a couple weeks ago to see the First Folio. My students are still talking about it, and today a student told me he has decided to apply to transfer to the UCI English program as a result of our visit! He had only been planning to apply to CSUs."
