Dr. Nimisha Parekh, director of the UCI Health Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program, and the UCI Digestive Health Institute team work diligently to discover and learn more effective treatments through innovative research, new programs and the development of lifesaving techniques.
Ultrasound technology has been used as a noninvasive and safe test to show how much IBD there is, where it is located and how active it is over time. When patients experience a flare up, they can be examined quickly in the clinic to determine if there are any complications, disease activity or intestinal inflammation without necessarily requiring a colonoscopy, MRI or CT scan. This practice has become the standard of care across Europe but is only now beginning to gain traction in the United States. Private philanthropy helped Mount Sinai Health System in New York City to become the first clinical site for IBD ultrasound in nation. Parekh’s goal is to purchase this equipment, receive training in this new technique and apply this practice to better care for patients in Orange County.
On April 18, UCI Giving Day, help us positively impact the lives of our patients at UCI Health. Your generosity will allow Parekh and our IBD faculty to receive world class training in this new technique to manage and treat IBD, as well as bring critical equipment to our exam rooms. A gift of any amount truly makes a difference today as we come together to make a collective impact.
