As the largest research library system in Orange County, UC Irvine Libraries are a major information hub for both the campus and our broader community. Every year, the Libraries host 3.5 million visitors to our physical and virtual sites, which are home to more than 5 million physical and electronic volumes. Through our library services and collections, we empower members of the UC Irvine community – and beyond – to explore, learn, and create new knowledge.
Today, we are seeking your support to help ensure the ongoing processing and preservation of the Libraries’ rare materials.
The UC Irvine Libraries Special Collections and Archives (SCA) houses these important materials, more than 11,000 rare books as well as manuscripts, photographs, and other archival materials. From Shakespeare’s First Folio and other rare editions to one-of-kind artist books and the seminal papers of internationally renowned Nobel Prize winners, SCA’s collections are a core part of UC Irvine’s teaching and research mission.
Primary source materials and rare works are important research resources integrated into hands-on instruction and course assignments. The continued care and stewardship of these historical materials are essential to their role in UC Irvine education and scholarship.
Over time, these materials require conservation treatment to ensure that they do not fall victim to the ravages of time. With your support, we can ensure that students and other scholars have access to our remarkable collections for generations to come.
Each gift made on Giving Day will make a big impact, especially when you participate in one of our giving matches or challenges.
Every dollar raised on Giving Day will directly support the processing and preservation of our rare collections. These gifts add up as well! Each time we complete a match or challenge; more dollars are unlocked to help us get closer to our goal.
Thank you for doing your part to ensure that our RARE collections receive continued CARE.
