Undergraduate research is one of the defining experiences for students at a public research university. Undergraduate Research is a well-established high-impact practice that has been shown to increase retention, academic performance, and time to degree. It also provides students with the following important benefits:
- Students get to work one-on-one with faculty and graduate researchers, gaining all the known benefits of a mentoring relation and at a very practical level, someone who can be a powerful reference and connector for future endeavors.
- Students gain important skills that are not always explicitly taught in traditional courses, such as team work, communication skills, and solving open-ended problems.
- Collaborations between students, faculty, corporate entities, and government agencies prepare the undergraduate researcher for the challenges of tomorrow and inspire them for a life-long passion for discovery and inquiry-based learning.
Especially important are scholarships in the summer that allow students who would otherwise have to work to engage in research.
Summer UROP Scholarships range from $1,500 - $5,000/ student for summer research and allows students to take maximum advantage of being at a research institution and gain critical skills for future careers. Students may also discover if research/graduate school is right for them. Your Giving Day gift today will directly support student scholarship awards:
- Gifts of $100 can provide student supplies for research
- Gifts of $250 can allow a student to partake in Research Discovery Program for early research
- Gifts of $500 can support two new student led full research projects
- Gifts of $1000 can fund a student research award
All students are required to present their research at the annual UROP Symposium in May. We invite all donors to attend the symposium, meet the students impacted by their generosity, and experience the great work done by UCI undergraduates!
