Gavin Herbert Eye Institute

Gavin Herbert Eye Institute 20/20 Society Challenge: 25 gifts to unlock a $6,000 gift from Drs. Barry Kuppermann and Vladimir Kefalov.

From pioneering clinical research aimed at developing therapies for late-stage macular degeneration to our Severe Ocular Surface Disease Program of Excellence, clinicians and researchers at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute are fully dedicated to discovering treatments for various diseases and vision disorders. The knowledge we gain could make a significant impact by preserving or restoring sight for you or a loved one.

This year, the funds raised during Giving Day will support the ongoing efforts of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute’s 20/20 Society. This society plays a vital role by providing funding for pilot grants to our researchers, empowering them to explore new scientific inquiries and advance our understanding of complex eye diseases. The philanthropic support of the 20/20 Society, contributed by a visionary group comprising friends, patients, faculty, staff, community members, and industry partners, is essential in equipping our scientists with the necessary resources to advance research that will ultimately eradicate preventable blindness.

“As the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, I am committed to providing resources and support to my research faculty. Seed funding from the 20/20 Society enables our vision scientists to pursue big ideas and initiate bold research that paves the way for long-term successes—and most importantly, advances new and innovative treatments and therapies for our patients.” – Barry Kuppermann, MD, PhD

“As the Vice Chair of Research in the Dept. of Ophthalmology, I play a significant role in administering seed grants through our 20/20 Society. The caliber of research coming out of our vision labs is exceptional. It’s an honor for me to support this program and the dedicated scientists working diligently to eradicate preventable blindness.” – Vladimir Kefalov, PhD
