UCI Giving Day 2021

The School of Physical Sciences discovers groundbreaking solutions to the existential challenges and questions facing humanity in climate change and health care, aided by advancing a deeper understanding of the universe around us. As an important part of this community, you know that UCI Physical Sciences Anteaters are in a different class. Physical Sciences students and graduates are equipped with a premier education, a drive to unearth new knowledge, and the skills to lead the scientific revolutions of the future. Our 164 diverse, world-class faculty engage in scientific collaborations, building community through networking and mentoring, recruiting and advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM.

We are committed to creating access to our programs, outreach for underrepresented communities, and represent inclusion within our school. As a community, we respect the dignity, individuality, and freedom of each member. At the same time, we strive to be a place where individuals and groups learn with and from each other. We aim to foster a sense of shared experience and common purpose, along with a collective responsibility for each other's well-being, and for the well-being of the University as a whole. Although we acknowledge the difficulties inherent in creating a community of individuals who are different from each other, we remain unwavering in our commitment to both diversity and community in a context of academic excellence. 

In line with these goals, this Giving Day, we are seeking your support for our Physical Sciences Office of Access, Outreach, and Inclusion. Our goal is to develop new and facilitate existing programs, events, and trainings to promote equity and inclusion for all of our populations - faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students and staff. 

With your support, we can impact our community in a lasting way. A gift to the Physical Sciences Fund for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will provide critical unrestricted funding to support our outreach and inclusion activities for our students, faculty, and community. Some programs that will benefit from your support today include: 

• Departmental information sessions for Historically Black Colleges and University students to learn about UCI fellowships, awards, summer programs, undergraduate research, and graduate programs
• Physical Sciences racial justice initiatives that recognize and respond to anti-Blackness as an existential threat to our mission as public research university
• Math CEO program – a mathematics program developed to serve underrepresented communities in Southern California
• Rising Stars Girls – a program dedicated to encouraging girls of all colors and backgrounds to learn, explore, and discover the universe 
• Advancing Faculty Diversity through evidence-based best practices to increase underrepresented minorities and women presence at each stage of the faculty recruitment process to include implicit bias training as part of the onboarding process
